DETERMINE THE PACKING ACCESSORIES NEEDED
Bubble wrap, boxes, tape, dust covers, mattress covers, clean newsprint, and more are all available for sale in the rental office. Clean pallets are also provided free of charge upon request. See our packing supplies here.
FILL CONTAINERS AND STACK THEM CAREFULLY
Partially full or bulging cartons may tip or collapse. Protect fragile items with bubble wrap and store them near the top of the unit. Place heavier boxes at the bottom.
PACKING YOUR FURNITURE
Place a pallet, cardboard or a mat on the floor and stand sofas and mattresses on end. Use mattress bags or drop cloths to keep these items in pristine condition. Disassemble beds and tables and wrap table legs in paper or bubble wrap. If a table can not be taken apart, put some padding on top of it and use it to stack boxes on top and underneath. Also use dresser tops (once they are protected with paper or padding) for stacking boxes. Use drawers for linens and delicate items. Keep upholstery off the floor and stack chairs seat to seat or on top of protected table tops. Finally, place a light cotton bed sheet or a purchased dust cover on top of your furniture.
Make sure that fridges and freezers are fully defrosted to prevent water damage and where possible leave the doors open to allow ventilation.
LABEL BOXES AND DO AN INVENTORY
Keep a list of labeled boxes at home or office for easy reference when you need to locate something packed away.
PACK THE UNIT CAREFULLY
Leave airspace around the perimeter for ventilation and do not lean items against the walls. Leave a walkway to the rear of your space for easy access. Place heavier items on the bottom and lighter boxes on top so even the height of the unit will be used. Place cardboard or a drop cloth under any engine or automotive parts. Try to place frequently used items near the front of the unit for easy access.
Never store live animals, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammables, toxic materials or any other items that need a controlled environment. Remember to drain the fuel from gasoline engines before storage. Never store any kind of food item - animal or human. These will attract pests.
